Karma Dog's Canine Good Citizen classes
& Work-Place Certified program
The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, established in 1989, is an American Kennel Club program to promote responsible dog parentship and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. A dog and handler team must take a short behavioral evaluation of less than half an hour; dogs who pass the evaluation earn the Canine Good Citizen certificate, which many people represent after the dog's name, abbreviating it as CGC; for example, "Fido, CGC".
We offer a 7 week Canine Good Citizen
Class (60 minute classes - on leash)
for when the next Canine Good Citizen class is being offered!
The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails. Test items include:
- Accepting a friendly stranger.
- Sitting politely for petting.
- Allowing basic grooming procedures.
- Walking on a loose lead.
- Walking through a crowd.
- Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place.
- Coming when called.
- Reacting appropriately to another dog.
- Reacting appropriately to distractions.
- Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner.
Evaluators sometimes combine elements during the actual test.
If all ten objectives are met, the handler can apply for a certificate and special dog tag from the AKC stating that the dog has earned the CGC.
Dogs do not have to be registered with the AKC to earn a CGC, nor do they have to be purebred or, in fact, registered with any canine organization. The goal is to promote good citizenship for all dogs.
Since its inception, the CGC program has become the model for similar programs around the world, is the backbone of other exams, such as those given for therapy dogs, and is a good starting point for more advanced dog training.

Divine Therapy Dog Training
A therapy dog is a dog trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and to people with learning difficulties. In addition, therapy dogs can also help physically stimulate people in nursing homes or assisted living facilities by playing ball, being brushed or petted, and going for walks.
Research indicates that interaction with therapy dogs can temporarily affect the release of various neurotransmitters in the brain; levels of oxytocin (linked with bonding) and dopamine (involved in the reward-motivation system) are increased, while cortisol levels (an immunosuppressant associated with stress) are decreased.
At Colleges and Universities
In 2014, Concordia University, Wisconsin became the first university in the United States to adopt a full-time therapy dog to its campus in Mequon, WI. The golden retriever, Zoey, is a Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog, trained to interact with people at churches, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, events, and in disaster response situations.

Get your Dog Workplace Certified™ by Karma Dog!
Our Workplace Certified program (WCP) program, established in 2015, was created by Karma Dog founder, Jeffrey Brian, to promote responsible dog parenting while encouraging business owners, administrators, and executives that allowing employee's well-behaved dogs into the workplace is actually good for business productivity!
A prime example of this is Google Inc. where employees with courteous canines are welcomed to bring their four-legged friends to the office.
What's are the Requirements?
A pet parent must take their dog through a short behavioral evaluation that consists of approximately twenty minutes; dogs who pass the evaluation earn the Karma Dog Workplace Certified certificate, which we represent after the dog's name, abbreviating it as WCP; for example, "Fido, WCP".
The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily. Test items include:
- Accepting a friendly co-worker.
- Sitting politely for petting during a series of phone calls.
- Allowing office staff to walk by them without soliciting attention.
- Walking on a loose leash in an office environment.
- Walking through a break room without laying down.
- Laying down on request and staying in place for a duration of 5 minutes.
- Coming when called using just a hand signal.
- Ignoring another dog by responding to a rock solid "leave it" request when asked to do so.
- Reacting calmly to unexpected workplace distractions such as people walking in and out.
- Calmly enduring a 3 minute separation from their pet parent while using the bathroom.
Our WCP evaluators combine elements of the Public Access Test along with the Canine Good Citizen test during the WCP test to make sure business owners feel 100% comfortable that a WCP Karma Dog is suitable for their office.
